Magician in Virginia

Northern Virginia associations, Richmond corporate work and the Hampton Roads military market

Virginia is around thirteen hours by road from Milwaukee, so in practice it is a flight, into Dulles, National or Richmond depending on where the event sits.

Northern Virginia dates often sit alongside Washington work, and if you are booking either it is worth saying so, because one trip can cover both. Travel is either built into the package or itemised on your quote, agreed before anything is booked.

What I get booked for in Virginia

Northern Virginia is government-adjacent business: contractors, defense and cybersecurity firms, the data-center companies out in Loudoun County, and the trade associations that keep offices within reach of the capital. Award dinners and client hospitality make up most of that calendar.

Richmond is finance, insurance and law, with a convention schedule of its own. Hampton Roads runs on the Navy and shipbuilding, where command functions, retirements and unit balls are a genuine category. Charlottesville and the Shenandoah wineries take most of the private and wedding side.

Where these shows happen

Northern Virginia work happens in hotel ballrooms and conference space around Tysons, Reston and Crystal City, and increasingly at the Loudoun County wineries, which have become the default for a company that wants an evening out of the office without driving two hours for it.

Richmond splits between the convention center downtown and the restored tobacco warehouses in Scott's Addition and Shockoe Bottom, where the rooms are handsome and the acoustics are awful. That matters more than it sounds: close-up magic works in a loud brick room because it is played to six people at a time, while a stage show in the same room needs a sound system the venue can actually provide.

Hampton Roads runs on the oceanfront resorts in Virginia Beach and the officers' clubs and hotel ballrooms around Norfolk. Charlottesville and the Shenandoah are wedding and winery country, mostly outdoors, mostly seasonal.

Travel

Roughly 13 hours by road from Milwaukee. That is normally still a drive rather than a flight, which means the full show travels with me, and travel is either built into the package or itemised on your quote, agreed before anything is booked.

Booking a fly-in act, if you have not before

Most people booking me into Virginia have not flown an entertainer in before, so here is how it actually runs.

I fly in the day before. Not the morning of, because a delayed connection is not a risk worth passing to you, and it means I can see the room before your guests are standing in it. I stay over and fly back the next day.

Strolling close-up needs nothing from the venue. No stage, no sound, no lighting, no setup time. I walk in and start. A stage show needs a microphone and somewhere to stand, and I will tell you exactly what before you sign anything.

Travel appears as its own line on the quote. Flights, a hotel night and ground transport, priced before you commit and never added afterward. If you are also booking something in Washington or Maryland that week, say so, because one trip covering two dates is cheaper for both of you than two trips.

Booking a magician in Virginia

Do you actually travel to Virginia, or is this a directory listing?

I actually travel. I am based in Milwaukee and Virginia is a flight, into Dulles, National or Richmond depending on where your event sits. I fly in the night before and stay over. The booking process is the same as a local one, with travel shown as its own line on the quote.

What does it cost to hire a magician in Virginia?

The fee depends on the format, how long you need me for and how many guests are in the room, and travel is quoted separately so you can see exactly what it adds. Tell me the date, the venue and a rough headcount and you will usually have a real number back the same day rather than a range.

We are a corporate client. What works best at a reception?

Strolling close-up, almost always. At a reception people are standing, holding a drink and working out who to talk to, and close-up magic gives them a reason to stop somewhere together. It needs no stage, no sound and no change to your run of show, and it turns the awkward first forty minutes into the part people remember.

Can you do a wedding reception?

Yes, and the useful slot is usually cocktail hour, while the couple is away with the photographer and the guests are standing around not knowing each other. Strolling magic covers exactly that gap. It does not touch your timeline and it does not compete with the band or the speeches.

What about festivals and outdoor events?

Strolling works outdoors and in a crowd, because it plays to small groups rather than a seated audience. A full stage show outdoors needs a covered stage and a sound system that can beat the wind, so tell me what you have and I will tell you honestly whether it will land.

We have a date in Washington too. Can one trip cover both?

Yes, and you should ask. Northern Virginia, Washington and the Maryland side of the Beltway are one working area for me. A Thursday evening in Tysons and a Friday lunch in Bethesda is a normal week, and splitting one set of travel costs across two dates is better for everybody.

How far ahead should we book?

For a specific date in gala season, which runs spring and again in the fall, earlier is genuinely better, and December books first. That said, it is always worth asking about a close date. Flights are easier to arrange at short notice than most people assume.
